We made this decision so that we can reach more founders and help them win.

Filling the Void

It’s easy to find podcasts and videos extolling the importance of finding product-market fit. You can also spend all day reading blog posts about the MVP process and how hard it is to get a meeting with a VC without first having revenue.

And, certainly, if you’re looking to learn how to build products and raise money, coding bootcamps and accelerators have become as ubiquitous as Starbucks.

What’s missing is a practical list of to-dos for each step to determine how (if at all) your product fits with a market, and then onwards to profitable revenue.

In the past, technology was expensive and complex and product talent was sparse. So, the biggest risk for startups was in the product itself.

But now, the costs and complexity of technology have been greatly reduced, and product talent is plentiful.

The risk has shifted away from product development and toward market development. However, the way startups function has not.

Most founders are incredibly product-focused. They pour time, energy, and money almost exclusively into product development. Many founders lack the knowledge and experience to efficiently and effectively bring a product to market.

Accelerators exacerbate this problem by focusing their curriculum on helping founders build their product and raise money, rather than helping founders market their product and make money.

About 70% of funded startups fail, and not because they couldn’t get the product, service, or technology to work.

As CBInsights reports, they failed because they couldn’t get the market to adopt it.
